Née en Suède, Marianne Ström vit et travaille depuis plus de 25 ans à Paris dans le Marais. Ses archives, de plus de 12 000 clichés en noir et blanc et en couleur, sont essentiellement axées sur l'architecture, ses détails, et la vie culturelle et sociale de ce quartier parisien mythique.

Visant le passé et le présent, cet ensemble photographique si singulier témoigne parfaitement de la transformation du Marais, jadis marécage cultivé par les moines, édifié par l'aristocratie, envahi par l'artisanat et les petits commerçants, et enfin sauvegardé des démolitions par la loi Malraux de 1962.

Aujourd'hui, le Marais, véritable chef-d'oeuvre vivant marqué par ses splendeurs historiques et culturelles d'antan, n'a pas su échapper aux griffes de la mode.

Born in Sweden, Marianne Ström lives and works in Paris, in the Marais. Her archives including some 12 000 photos in black and white and color, taken over a period of 25 years, focus primarily on architecture, architectural détails and the cultural and social life of this parisian mythical quarter.

Capturing the past and present, this original documentation présents the transformation of the Marais : a former marsh cultivated by the monks, edified by the aristocracy, invaded by artisans and cottage industry, finally rescued from demolition by the Malraux Law in 1962.

Today, the Marais, this living masterpiece, marked by its historical and cultural splendors of the past, is increasingly labeled by trendy fashion.

The principal characteristic of this book is that it combines the view of an an historian and her knowledge of the quarter, with a photographer's eye for the artistic, aesthetic and arbitrary.
